Lapis Lazuli is a deep blue semi-precious stone. The primary source of the stone is in Afghanistan. With this table we have also used the lapis lazuli in conjunction with stainless steel which follows the tradition of combining the stone with silver metals. The rich and powerful have been have been using this lapis lazuli and silver gilt combination millenniums.
Craftsmen have been creating faux Lapis for hundreds of years, trying to imitate the rich blues and gold of the real stone. They used indigo paint which they sometimes flecked with gold. Certainly you can find samples of trinket boxes and mirror frames made this way. Eventually a few very ago I worked out a method of creating a really realistic faux lapis lazuli using photography. As you can see from the coasters, the results are amazing.
